diseases and the interrelationship between valuable habitat and
potential hazard; for development proposals near trees we can liaise
with architects, developers and local planning authority
representatives to advise on design layout and tree protection. - Services we offer include — planting scheme design; management
plans; tree mapping and level surveys; tree risk and hazard
assessments; detailed tree inspections; planning integration reports
following guidelines set out in BS 5837:2012 Trees in relation to design,
demolition and construction — Recommendations — including pre-
design site surveys, arboricultural impact assessments, method
statements and supervision and monitoring; mortgage and home
insurance reports and woodland surveys for conservation or amenity.
Planning Advice and Applications
- For trees subject to statutory protection we can liaise with local
planning authorities — usually district councils or national parks — advise
on appropriate pruning, tree removal or other course of action and
complete planning applications — for trees subject to a Tree
Preservation Order — or give written notice of intent for trees within a
Conservation Area. - If trees require pruning or removal due to the risk they represent we can
prepare an arboriculturalist's report to accompany applications; or in
the case of imminently hazardous trees that are exempt under the
dead or dangerous clause (Reg. 14 [2] of the Town and Country [Tree
preservation] Regulations 2012 can give either immediate or a five day
notice of intent to complete works.
Ancient and Veteran Tree Mananagement
- An ancient tree is one that has grown beyond maturity and is very old
in comparison with trees of the same species; they tend to be notable
trees of high aesthetic appeal, have historical links to the past, may
define historic landscapes and provide habitats for a wide range of
species, many requiring the extensive decay related features found
only in ancient or veteran trees. - A veteran tree is one that has many of the characteristics of an ancient
tree but that may have gained them through adversity rather than
over a long period of time. - Services we offer include — vegetation management, mulching,
retrenchment pruning, risk assessment and hazard management.
Habitat Management
- In conjunction with ecologists and other allied specialists we can
advise on habitat management- typically of ancient/veteran trees and
wider connected habitats - particularly in locations where there are
minimal risks to people and property and the benefits of remedial
action are focused towards the tree and associated flora and fauna.
Woodland Management
- For small-scale, privately owned woodland we can prepare
management plans, advise on forestry practice — thinning, harvesting,
planting, natural regeneration, conservation, pests and diseases — and
provide information on woodland grant schemes.
Veteranisation
- There is an increasingly large age gap between our ancient trees and
the next generation of ancient trees; as we gradually lose them
and the valuable habitat they provide, we run the risk of losing
flora and fauna that have evolved to co-exist with them. - Veteranisation is the process of deliberately creating veteran
characteristics in younger trees, to develop those habitats and to
bridge the gap. - Veteranisation techniques include ring-barking branches, breaking
branches, cutting woodpecker holes and nest boxes directly into the
stem, topping trees (leaving coronet cuts or jagged wounds) and
removing bark at the base of trees to emulate browsing damage.
Planting
- We can advise on species selection appropriate to the location, soil type and
customer requirements. - A planting service from individual trees to larger planting schemes is
available
Training and safety
- Qualifications, from basic chainsaw use to professional tree inspection,
and on-going training, from trauma care and aerial rescue to valuing
and managing veteran trees, are attained or provided dependant on
the individual's position within the company. - On-site safety is managed by the team leader and /or the site safety
supervisor. - Certificates, records of training, company safety policy, method
statements, risk assessments and copies of insurance are available on
